As of 2004 September 21, NAIF is releasing the text
PCK file
pck00008.tpc
The file is available on NAIF's server
naif.jpl.nasa.gov
in the path
pub/naif/generic_kernels/pck
The file may be picked up via anonymous ftp. Use ASCII mode to
transfer the file.
This kernel contains rotational elements and triaxial ellipsoid
size/shape models for the sun, planets, natural satellites, and
selected asteroids.
The data in the file are taken, with few exceptions, from
[1] Seidelmann, P.K., Abalakin, V.K., Bursa, M., Davies, M.E.,
Bergh, C. de, Lieske, J.H., Oberst, J., Simon, J.L.,
Standish, E.M., Stooke, P., and Thomas, P.C. (2002).
"Report of the IAU/IAG Working Group on Cartographic
Coordinates and Rotational Elements of the Planets and
Satellites: 2000," Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical
Astronomy, v.82, Issue 1, pp. 83-111.
Source [1] is the latest published version of this working group report,
although a preprint of the 2003 report is available. That preprint
[2] Seidelmann, P.K., Archinal, B.A., A'Hearn, M.F.,
Cruikshank, D.P., Hilton, J.L., Keller, H.U., Oberst, J.,
Simon, J.L., Stooke, P., Tholen, D.J., and Thomas, P.C.
"Report of the IAU/IAG Working Group on Cartographic
Coordinates and Rotational Elements of the Planets and
Satellites: 2003," Unpublished.
states (p. 2) that there are no updates for the data for planets
and satellites.
The complete set of data sources is documented in the file.
This file supersedes the PCK file
pck00007.tpc
A comparison of the data differences between the two files is included
below. The differences were derived using the N0057 version of the
Fortran SPICE Toolkit. Concerning Neptune: earlier Toolkit versions
cannot make use of the trigonometric polynomial terms appearing in the
rotational elements for Neptune. The data for Neptune from [1] have
not changed from the previous report.
Another change of note evident from the comparison report is that both
the kernel variable names and values for the earth north geomagnetic
centered dipole have been updated; the old kernel variable names invited
confusion with the earth's north magnetic pole.
The new file is more thoroughly documented via in-line comments
than its predecessor; those differences are not shown below.
This file is not intended to supersede PCK files adopted by flight
projects.
