We're set for Wednesday.  I'm thinking of running two RSRs: one using
DSN generated predicts, and the other RS generated predicts (if I'm
able to generate them correctly).

I collected 1-way DSP and RSR data in parallel for about an hour.
This was done over DSS-14 today (DOY 262, BOT 3:40 p.m. PDT).
 
I ran two RSRs: one using DSN generated predicts, and the other
using Radio Science generated predicts.  I recorded on four
channels per RSR using the following bandwidths: 1k, 2k, 4k, and
8k Hz.  This adds up to 8 RSR data files.
 
The RSR and DSP data times are 01-262/23:35:00 to 01-263/00:40:00.
I transferred the RSR data to /users/m9/data/aseel on magellan.
The files names are 01.262.14.2335-0040.XY.rsr where:
X = 1, 2, 4 or 8 for 1k, 2k, 4k and 8k Hz bandwidths, respectively.
Y = d or r for DSN and Radio Science predicts, respectively.
 
The DSP data are on the CDR and ready to be queried.

It wasn't a miscommunication.  I knew that we needed 16-bit samples.
That's what I've used before.  I remember setting the configuration
to 16-bits, but I also remember that I had a problem loading the
predicts so I disconnected and reconnected to the RSR.  The default
configuration is 8-bit, so I fear that I may have forgotten to reset
it to 16-bits.  I'm terribly sorry.  I will reschedule a pass to
collect the data again.  I hope that you didn't already spend much
time looking at the data.

I collected RSR and DSP data over DSS 63 today.  The recording started
at 284/19:30:00 and ended at 283/20:35:00.
 
The DSP recording went well.  The data is ready to be queried.
 
I recorded 8 RSR data sets per Dick's request:  1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz on
one RSR with 16-bit samples; and 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz on a second with
8-bit samples.  All using RS predicts.  27 minutes into the recording
I started getting some warning messages which I'm not sure if and how
they'll have any affect on the data.  If I did try to fix it, that
would've put a phase shift in the data, so I decided to continue with
the recording.  It would actually be interesting to know whether you
see anything in the data or not.  I have the exact times of the warnings.

I have processed the ODR and 8 RSR's recorded from 2001/284-19:30:00 to
2001/284-20:35:00 at DSS 63, and calculated the Allan deviation from each
recording.
 
The ODR was recorded at 5 kHz with 12 bits/sample (real only). The RSR's were
recorded at 1, 2, 4 and 8 kHz with 8 bit I/8 bit Q (complex) and with
16 bit I/16 bit Q. The results between RSR and ODR are comparable at all
sample rates and with both RSR sample resolutions. The SNR during the
recording interval was approximately 47 dB/Hz. It would still be nice to
compare the performance of 8 and 16 bit RSR sampling with spacecraft telemetry
off (and substantially higher signal level). The Allan deviation calculations
for ODR and RSR's are included below.
 
You may also find a postscript file with comparison between 5 kHz (real) ODR
and 2 kHz (complex) 8-bit RSR in magellan:/users/z00/USO/adcomp2.ps.

To keep everyone informed, the current plan for MGS recovery is to
attempt to have MGS recovered by Monday, October 22.
 
Currently Telemetry data is sparse due to Sun Coning and the
intermittent 10 bps downlink.  This first steps will be to stop the
Sun coning at a point were continuos telemetry lock can be obtain.
Next MRO's will be requested to determine the cause of the C-mode
entry. At this point a meeting will be called so the health and
safety of MGS can be address prior to taking the next steps in the
recovery process. Currently no time is set for this initial meeting.

The MGS Spacecraft has recovered from the latest Contingency mode entry.
 
MGS will be in the Relay16 Mapping configuration with a nominal
Back-Ground Sequence executing at approximately 01-295/0515z (Sunday
10:15 PM Pacific). All Spacecraft Subsystems are operating within
expected states.
 
The MGS spacecraft entered contingency mode 2001-292T04:52:18z.
Symptoms of spacecraft slowly drifting off point could be seen in the
degradation of the downlink AGC after the spacecraft return from a
ROTO observation at approximately 292/00:40z. No unusual spacecraft
activity (sequences) or uplinks were taking place at the time of
entry.
 
Based on the latest available data, this contingency mode entry is
similar to the contingency mode entry of September 6, 2001.  On
September 6 an uncataloged celestial body seemed to interfered with
STAREX processing following a ROTO.  If STAREX misidentifies a star
during the period the attitude covariances are widened to aid the
bias convergence process following a ROTO, the gyro biases may get
corrupted leading to difficulties in determining attitude knowledge
and subsequent contingency mode entry.
 
Upon Contingency mode entry the spacecraft enters sun coning with Low
Gain Antenna at a 10bps downlink telemetry rate after each
occultation. Contingency mode recovery process began Friday morning
October 19 once the downlink signal from MGS were acquired and
Contingency mode sun coning was confirmed. Inertial reference was
reestablished by the end of the day Friday which confirm no long term
anomalies with STAREX.  MGS then established NADIR point and resumed
nominal HGA tracking at approximately at 294/00:22z (Saturday October
20 at 5:22 PM Pacific) The TES and MOC science instruments were Power
on Sunday afternoon October 21. A nominal Back-Ground Sequence was
set to begin executing at approximately 01-295/0500z (Sunday 10:00 PM
Pacific) The MOLA instrument will be turned on as part of the
Back-Ground Sequence Monday night and MAG/ER instruments will be
powered on sometime next week following the Mars Odyssey MOI
activities.

Our request to collect half an hour of RSR test data with telemetry
off was approved.  This will occur on DOY 319 (11/15) over DSS-65.
Telemetry will be turned off between 1700 and 1730 SCET.  The SOE is
not out yet.
 
Will we be using the same configurations that we used last time, i.e.,
RS predicts only, 8-bits on one RSR, 16-bits on the other, both with 1,
2, 4, and 8 kHz bandwidths?  The other rack (2 RSRs) is available so
we can do as many as 8 additional combinations if you'd like.

  I would just repeat the previous test.  But, if Joe has other
  ideas, please listen to him.  I'm leaving for some family business
  early on Nov 6 and won't be back until late on Nov 12 (and may only
  be available for partial days during the week following).

The test is over and I'm getting ready to query the RSR data.
Telemetry was off at 319/17:39:45, but I used the first couple
of minutes to change attenuation values on both the RSR and DSP.
The last attenuation change on the RSR was at 17:41:05, and
the last one on the DSP was at 17:42:11. I assume you'd want
me to start the RSR query after the last change, so I'll start
it at 17:41:10, OK with you?
 
The DSP data is on the CDR and ready to be queried.  Telemetry
was back on at 18:09:45, but I recorded until 18:11:00.

Hello,
 
Our RSR/DSP test with telemetry off this morning went well.  The
purpose of this test was to compare the performance and data quality
of the RSR and DSP under the normal MGS spacecraft occultation
configuration. The test occurred over DSS-65 and lasted for 30 minutes.
Telemetry was turned off between 319/17:39:45 and 319/18:09:45 ERT-UTC.
Both RSR and DSP data were collected without any problems, and all data
files were transferred to Stanford.
 
This was also an opportunity to test MGS RSR data playback and query.
Currently, playing back RSR data blocks that are 8 Kbytes and larger
break the CDR (Central Data Record), so 2 Kb and 4 Kb data blocks were
played back today.  Both the data playback and query worked OK.
