The pointing of a platform or an instrument is often expressed in terms of a transformation matrix from some standard inertial reference frame to a instrument-fixed frame. In the past, the instrument was often a camera, and the transformation was thus dubbed the ``C-matrix''; hence the choice of C as the name for the pointing kernel. The data contained in C-kernel files can be accessed and manipulated by a collection of FORTRAN 77 subroutines which are part of the SPICELIB library or C functions which are part of the CSPICE library. These subroutines/functions can be integrated into user application programs. The SPICE system toolkit for a number of computer platforms or information regarding how it can be obtained is located in the "/software" subdirectory of the main directory of this data set. To use C-kernels, a Spacecraft Clock Kernel (SCLK) is required. Also, for C-Kernels containing orientation of a project-defined frames, a Frame Definitions File is required. Refer to the ``ck.req'' document provided with the toolkit or available from the NAIF Node of PDS if SPICE toolkit is not included with this data set to get more information on how to access C-kernel data. MGS C-kernels contained on this volume ====================================== The following MGS C-kernels are provided in this volume (only name portion of the file name is shown; the extension of all file names is ".bc"): -- MGS Spacecraft Orientation CK Files: mgs_sc_[PHASE][_vV] spacecraft orientation CK files covering the whole or a portion of a particular phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily SC CK files produced by the SC Team at LMA, containing orientation data partially corrected for time bias. Refer to the CK coverage table provided below to find out coverage of a particular CK file. mgs_ext_roto_all[_vV] predict spacecraft orientation CK files for ``ROTO'' observations during the Extended and Extended- Extended phases of the mission. -- MGS Solar Array Orientation CK Files: mgs_sa_[PHASE][_vV] solar array orientation CK files covering the whole or a portion of a particular phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily SA CK files produced by the SC Team at LMA. mgs_sa_hinge_steady[_vV] -Y Solar Array broken hinge deflection CK file. -- MGS High Gain Antenna Orientation CK Files: mgs_hga_[PHASE][_vV] high gain antenna gimbal orientation CK files covering the whole or a portion of a particular phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily HGA CK files produced by NAIF. mgs_hga_hinge[_vV] HGA deployment hinge rotation CK file. mgs_hga_gimbal_stowed HGA gimbal orientation CK files covering the period prior to the HGA deployment (launch to 1999-03-28). If more than one CK of a particual kind is present for a given time interval, the file with the latest version, [_vV], superseeds all earlier versions.
