PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT INTERCHANGE_FORMAT = ASCII PUBLICATION_DATE = 2010-03-15 NOTE = "I-Kernel Information" END_OBJECT = TEXT END General Information About SPICE I-Kernels ========================================= In the SPICE system, I-kernels contain field-of-view specifications, internal timing parameters, detector geometry specifications and other geometric parameters for the instrument. These parameters along with knowledge of the spacecraft pointing (C kernel) and instrument mounting alignment (Frames Kernel) allow the user to use SPICE APIs to calculate the view directions of the individual instrument pixels or detectors. The data contained in I-kernel files can be accessed and manipulated in conjunction with other data using the SPICE Toolkit APIs, calls to which can be integrated into user application programs. The information regarding how to obtain the SPICE system toolkit for a number of languages and computer platforms is located in the ``/software'' subdirectory of the main directory of this data set. Refer to the ``kernel.req'' document provided with the Toolkit to get more information on how to access I-kernel data. MESSENGER I-kernels Provided in This Data Set ============================================= The following IK files are provided in this data set. Only the name portion of the file name is shown on the right; the extension of all file names is ``.ti''. msgr_epps_vNNN The MESSENGER Energetic Particle and Plasma Spectrometer IK file containing EPS and FIPS field-of-view (FOV) specifications. msgr_grns_vNNN The MESSENGER Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectrometer (GRNS) IK files containing GRS and NS FOV specifications. msgr_mag_vNNN The MESSENGER Magnetometer IK file. The current release of the magnetometer instrument kernel contains no data, although it does contain platform and NAIF IDs. The FOV specifications normally provided in an IK file do not make sense for this instrument. msgr_mascs_vNNN The Mercury Atmospheric and Surface Composition Spectrometer (MASCS) Ultraviolet and Visible Spectrometer (UVVS) and Visible and Infrared Spectrograph (VIRS) IK file containing UVVS and VIRS FOV specifications. msgr_mdis_vNNN MESSENGER Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) IK file containing first order optical parameters, FOV parameters, WAC FOV definition, and NAC FOV definition. msgr_mla_vNNN The Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) IK file containing timing, beam geometry, and receiver geometry parameters. msgr_xrs_vNNN The MESSENGER X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) IK file containing the MXU and SAX FOV Specifications msgr_rs_vNNN The MESSENGER Radio Science Experiment (RS) IK file containing antenna offsets, and mode parameter information. All IK files provided in this data set contain actual data. If this data set contains multiple IK files for a particular instrument, the one with the latest version (NNN) supersedes all previous versions. Kernel File Details =================== The most detailed description of the data in an IK file is provided in metadata included inside the description area of the file. This information can be viewed using any text editor program.
