General information about SPICE I-kernels
=========================================

   In the SPICE system, I-kernels describe how an instrument is mounted
   to the instrument platform. I-kernels also contain instrument
   field-of-view specifications, principal axes specifications and
   possibly other instrument-specific information useful in the SPICE
   context.

   The I-Kernel mounting alignment, along with knowledge of the
   spacecraft position (SP kernel) and instrument pointing (C kernel),
   allows the user to use a collection of subroutines that are part of
   the SPICELIB library, the major component of the NAIF Toolkit. These
   subroutines can be integrated into user application programs.
   Information about obtaining the SPICE Toolkit is located in the
   "software" subdirectory of the main directory of this dataset.

   Refer to the Kernel Required Reading (kernel.req) document provided
   with the toolkit or available from the NAIF Node of the PDS, to get
   more information on how to access I-Kernel data.


Deep Impact I-kernels Provided on This Volume
=============================================

   This volume contains the following Deep Impact Flyby (DIF) and Deep
   Impact Impactor (DII) IK files (only the leading portion of the
   file name is shown; the extension of all file names is ".ti"):

      dif_hri_v10   IK file for the DIF High Resolution Imager (HRI)
                    instrument

      dif_mri_v10   IK file for the DIF Medium Resolution Imager (MRI)
                    instrument

      dii_its_v10   IK file for the DII Impactor Targeting Sensor (ITS)
                    instrument

   All files are in IEEE text format and must be copied using ftp ASCII
   transfer to any non-UNIX workstation.


Deep Impact IK File Naming Scheme
===================================

   The Deep Impact IKs provided on this volume are named according to
   the following scheme:

      sc_inst_vXX.ti

   where:

      sc        is the name of the spacecraft: "dif" or "dii";

      inst      is the name of the instrument: "hri" for High
                Resolution Imager, "mri" for Medium Resolution Imager,
                "its" for Impactor Targeting Sensor;

      vXX       is the file version number;

   If multiple versions of an IK file are provided for an instrument,
   always use the latest version (unless an earlier version is needed
   for some special reasons.)
     

Kernel File Details
===================

   The most detailed description of the data in an IK file is provided
   in metadata included inside the descriptive text areas within the
   file. This information can be viewed using any text editor.
