This file was created by NAIF for archiving in the Planetary Data System (PDS). Pedigree -------------------------------------------------------- This SPK file contains MRO orbit reconstruction provided by Eugene Fahnestock, SSD, JPL. The MRO orbit determination (OD) to create these trajectories was performed from 11-SEP-2006 18:00:00. The orbits were divided into arcs of a nominal length of 6 days, with overlap of two days between successive arcs, except for when a maneuver or other event or anomalous condition necessitated breaking the arcs. For each major maneuver epoch tabulated in the MRO Navigation Weekly Summary documents, the preceding arc was ended 1 minute before the maneuver epoch, and the following arc was begun 1 minute after the maneuver epoch. Other arc breaks occurred at 15-NOV-2006 18:00:00, 15-NOV-2007 16:00:00, 06-JUN-2009 16:00:00, and 07-AUG-2009 16:00:00 for unknown events, and at 07-NOV-2007 15:30:00 for an especially large AMD. While the fit was performed across the October 2006 solar conjunction, arc breaks due to omission of noisy data were centered on the next three solar conjunctions (specifically, breaks spanned from 30-NOV-2008 16:00:00 to 10-DEC-2008 16:00:00 and 31-JAN-2011 16:00:00 to 10-FEB-2011 16:00:00 and 12-APR-2013 16:00:00 to 26-APR-2013 16:00:00). Spacecraft Data and Calibrations: The orbits were fit to 2-way and 3-way Doppler tracking data at an average data rate of 10 seconds = 0.1 Hz obtained during those portions of each orbit with line-of-sight between MRO and Earth. Typically about 22,000 points of 2-way Doppler and 800-1000 points of 3-way Doppler were used for each nominal 6-day arc. Also, typically fewer than 100 range data points were used for each nominal 6-day arc, until range data was no longer obtained from about 26-JUL-2014 onward (though it may be resumed in the future). All Doppler and range data were calibrated at each DSN complex for daily Earth dry and wet troposphere corrections and daily Earth ionosphere corrections based on GPS measurements. Spacecraft Force (Dynamics) Models: The background gravity field for Mars used in the OD was MRO110C (available at http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/mro/mro-m-rss-5-sdp- v1/mrors_1xxx/data/shadr/), an improvement over the MRO110B2 presented in (Konopliv et al., Icarus, 2011). The planetary and satellite ephemeris files used were DE430 (available at http://naif.jpl.nasa.gov/pub/naif/generic_kernels/spk/planets/), and MAR097 (Jacobson and Lainey, PSS, 2013), respectively. The Mars orientation model in (Konopliv et al., Icarus, 2011) was also used with updates from the MRO110C solution. Solar radiation pressure and atmospheric drag forces were modeled, with shadowing with respect to the sun and the orbital velocity vector calculated using spacecraft attitude quaternions and solar array orientation quaternions and high gain antenna (HGA) gimbal angles and angular rates from the MRO telemetry, together with a simple box-wing model. The atmospheric drag model used density values from the Mars-GRAM 2000, with minor changes. Major maneuvers (OTMs/OSMs) and smaller AMD maneuvers, the latter with an average interval of 2 days after the first few months of the mission, were modeled by aggregating individual thruster pulse telemetry. OD Parametrization: In addition to estimating the Cartesian position and velocity of the MRO spacecraft in the Mars centered EME2000 frame at each arc~s starting epoch, the following are estimated for every arc: a) an overall solar pressure acceleration scale factor; b) ratios of the effective area to nominal area in the two directions orthogonal to the sun direction; c) empirical acceleration parameters, as a bias acceleration in the along-track d) drag model scale factors; e) per-orbit drag coefficients; f) x,y,z components of thruster event impulses; g) global F1 biases; h) per-pass F1 biases and F3 biases ; i) station range biases; j) global range bias; and k) F2 periodic amplitudes. For the most part the entire mission is covered without gaps between data arcs, except for gaps due to spacecraft problems (safemode), maneuvers, or noisy data (near solar conjunction). The appendix 3 below provides more information about the arcs and gaps in the trajectory files in this set. The original individual trajectory data were provided in NIO files These NIO files were converted Type 1 SPK files using the NIOSPK utility program. The resultant Type 1 SPK files were too large in size to be suitable for the archive (up to 70 MB for a 6 days period). To reduce the size these SPKs were sampled with 10 second step and sampled data were packaged to Type 13/Degree 7 SPKs using the SPKWARP utility program. During the merge process the usable coverage of all arcs was reduced by 3 minutes at the front to avoid polynomial ringing due to fits across maneuvers resulting from poor knowledge of exact maneuver times. The re-sampled Type 13 SPKs matched to the original Type 1 SPKs to sub-millimeter level. The re-sampled SPKs were then merged together using the SPKMERGE utility program to make this file (see appendix 1 for the SPKMERGE log.) Segment Boundary Discontinuities -------------------------------------------------------- This SPK file contains a large number of SPK segments that came from original individual SPK files. Although, each segment provides continuous trajectory within the interval that it covers, in general position and velocity discontinuities exist at the boundaries of the segment and the segments whose coverages immediately precede or follow it. The times and magnitudes of these discontinuities are provided in Appendix 2 of these comments. Usage -------------------------------------------------------- Since this file contains just the spacecraft trajectory, it should be used together with the latest planetary ephemeris and satellite ephemeris appropriate for the task at hand.
