Semenov, NAIF/JPL, Boris.Semenov@jpl.nasa.gov Implementation Notes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This file is used by the SPICE system as follows: programs that make use of this kernel must ``load'' the kernel, normally during program initialization. The SPICE routine FURNSH loads a kernel file into the pool as shown below. CALL FURNSH ( 'frame_kernel_name; ) -- FORTRAN furnsh_c ( "frame_kernel_name" ); -- C cspice_furnsh, frame_kernel_name -- IDL cspice_furnsh( 'frame_kernel_name' ) -- MATLAB Once the file has been loaded, the SPICE routine GETFOV (getfov_c in C, cspice_getfov in IDL and MATLAB) can be used to retrieve FOV parameters for a given instrument or structure. This file was created and may be updated with a text editor or word processor. Naming Conventions ---------------------------------------------------------- All names referencing values in this IK file start with the characters `INS' followed by the NAIF JUNO spacecraft ID number (-61) followed by a NAIF three digit ID code for UVS: JUNO_UVS_BASE -61700 JUNO_UVS -61701 The remainder of the keyword name is an underscore character followed by the unique name of the data item. For example, the UVS boresight direction in the JUNO_UVS frame is specified by: INS-61701_BORESIGHT The upper bound on the length of the name of any data item is 32 characters. If the same item is included in more than one file, or if the same item appears more than once within a single file, the latest value supersedes any earlier values. Instrument Description --------------------------------------------------------- From [Gladstone et al., 2014]: ``Juno-UVS is a long-slit imaging spectrograph designed to observe and characterize Jupiter's far-ultraviolet (FUV) auroral emission. [...] Juno-UVS is based on a series of imaging FUV spectrographs currently in flight -the two Alice instruments on the Rosetta and New Horizons missions, and the Lyman Alpha Mapping Project on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. However, Juno-UVS has several important modifications, including: (i) a scan mirror (for targeting specific auroral features) (ii) extensive shielding (for mitigation of electronics and data quality degradation by energetic particles) (iii) a cross delay line microchannel plate detector (for both faster photon counting and improved spatial resolution)'' . . . Juno-UVS consists of two separate sections: a dedicated telescope/ spectrograph assembly and a vault electronics box. The telescope/ spectrograph assembly contains a telescope that feeds a 15cm Rowland circle spectrograph with a spectral bandpass of 68-210 nm. The telescope has an input aperture 40 mm x 40 mm and uses an off-axis parabolic (OAP) primary mirror. A flat scan mirror situated at the front end of the telescope (used to look at up to +/- 30 deg perpendicular to the Juno spin plane) directs incoming light to the primary. The light is then focused onto the spectrograph entrance slit which has three contiguous segments with fields-of-view (FOV) of 0.2 deg x 2.5 deg, 0.025 deg x 2 deg and 0.2 deg x 2.5 deg projected onto the sky. This "dog-bone" shaped slit's long axis is parallel to the spacecraft spin axis. Light entering the slit is dispersed by a toroidal diffraction grating which focuses the UV bandpass onto a curved microchannel plate cross delay line (XDL) detector with a solar blind, UV-sensitive CsI photocathode. Tantalum plates contiguously surround the detector and detector electronics assembly to shield the detector from general particle radiation and high-energy electrons in particular. The detector electronics are located behind the detector.'' Mounting Alignment -------------------------------------------------------- Refer to the latest version of the Juno Frames Definition Kernel (FK) [3] for the UVS frame definitions and mounting alignment information. Apparent FOV Layout -------------------------------------------------------- From [Greathouse et al., 2013]: ``The entrance slit has a FOV of 0.025 deg in the dispersion direction by 2 deg in the spatial direction (i.e. perpendicular to the dispersion direction) at the center of the FOV, and 0.2 deg in the dispersion direction by 2.55 deg in the spatial direction centered at distances of +/- 2.33 off-axis in the spatial direction (producing a dog-bone shaped slit). There are thin bars of material between each of the sections to reduce stray light incident into the narrow slit.'' The diagram below illustrates the UVS FOV/detector layout ->|-------|<- 0.2 deg ->|-|<- 0.025 deg --- --- *_______* ^ ^ | | | | 2.55 deg | | | | | | | v | | | | --- *__* *__* v | ^ | | ^ 0.05 deg | | | | | | | | | | 7.2 deg | 2 deg +Xuvs |x-------------> +Yuvs | | ||| | | ||| | v ||| | --- *__*|*__* | ^ | | | | | 2.55 deg | | | +Xuvs (boresight) | | | | | is into the page v v | | | --- --- *___|___* Y and Z extents are | shown in different scales. | V +Zuvs Optics Parameters -------------------------------------------------------- Juno-UVS has the following optics parameters: -------------------------------------------------- parameter -------------------------------------------------- Focal length (mm) 120 f-number 3 Spatial pixel plate scale (deg/pixel) 0.041 Aperture diameter (mm) 40 -------------------------------------------------- These parameters are captured in the following keywords in the same units as in the table: \begindata INS-61701_FOCAL_LENGTH = ( 120 ) INS-61701_F/NUMBER = ( 3 ) INS-61701_SPATIAL_PIX_SCALE = ( 0.041 ) INS-61701_APERTURE_DIAMETER = ( 40 ) \begintext Detector Parameters -------------------------------------------------------- From [Gladstone et al., 2014]: ''The cross-delay (XDL) anode is a rectangular format of 44 mm x 30 mm. The combination anode array and MCP sizes gives an active array format of 35 mm x 18 mm necessary to capture the entire 68-210 nm instrument bandpass. The pixel readout format is 2048 pixels (spectral dimension) x 256 pixels (spatial dimension). The active area is 35 mm x 18 mm, with approximately 1500 spectral pixel and approximately 230 spatial pixels.'' Juno-UVS has the following detector parameters: ----------------------------------------------------------------- parameter ----------------------------------------------------------------- Detector size in pixels 2048 (spectral) x 256 (spatial) ----------------------------------------------------------------- \begindata INS-61701_SPECTRAL_PIXEL_SAMPLES = ( 2048 ) INS-61701_SPATIAL_PIXEL_SAMPLES = ( 256 ) \begintext FOV Definition -------------------------------------------------------- This section contains definitions for the UVS FOVs. From [Greathouse et al., 2013]: ''[...] to calibrate the angular offset of the scan mirror in flight, we created a sky mapping program that correlates 1000 of the brightest UV stars in the sky to positions of observed bright stars in our calibration data sets. Using the NAIF ICY toolkit, we calculate predicted right ascensions and declinations for our scan map observations. We then calculate the distances of the observed bright stars to the known positions. We do these calculations over a number of x, y, and z rotations for the UVS scan mirror and find the rotation angles with minimize the distances between the stars and known positions. This calculation has been done for all of the pointings observed during HVC [...]'' The coordinates of the 12 boundary corners have been determined as follows: - The Xuvs and Zuvs coordinates of the boundary have been defined by extrapolating the row number of the boundary pixels (i.e. 53.5 ; 118.5 ; 169.5 ; 235.5) using the best fit curve (3rd order fit for the Xuvs coordinate and Zuvs coordinate) of the pixel coordinates of the wide slits and the narrow slit. This assumes that the effective pixels' row numbers of the detector collection area range from 54 to 234. - The Yuvs coordinates of the boundary have been defined by extrapolating the Yuvs coordinate using the best fit curve of the wide and narrow slits Yuvs coordinate (2nd order fit) and by adding half the spatial resolution of a single pixel in the Yuvs direction, knowing the resolution of each single pixel in pixel length per degree (computed by dividing the Z_uvs coordinate between two adjacent pixel by the spatial pixel plate scale (0.041 degree/pixel +/- 0.001, measured during ground calibration)), and knowing the spatial resolution of the wide slit (0.2 degrees) and the narrow slit (0.025). The UVS FOV is defined for the instrument ID -61701 as a polygonal pyramid using a set of boundary vectors passing through each corner designated by "*" on the diagram in the section "Apparent FOV Layout" above. The boresight (+X axis) and the boundary vectors are given in the JUNO_UVS frame. \begindata INS-61701_FOV_FRAME = 'JUNO_UVS' INS-61701_FOV_SHAPE = 'POLYGON' INS-61701_BORESIGHT = ( 0.999999 0.000923285 0.00100269 ) INS-61701_FOV_BOUNDARY_CORNERS = ( 0.99785368 -0.0012638893 0.065502067 0.99785368 0.0021808434 0.065502067 0.99981809 0.0022748828 0.019056954 0.99981809 0.00076781224 0.019056954 0.99985505 0.0016974997 -0.016957727 0.99985505 0.0032045703 -0.016957727 0.99805053 0.0054803225 -0.062314743 0.99805053 0.0020355897 -0.062314743 0.99985505 -0.00024016245 -0.016957727 0.99985505 0.0012669081 -0.016957727 0.99981809 0.00033722065 0.019056954 0.99981809 -0.0011698499 0.019056954 ) \begintext An auxillary FOV approximately circumscribing the full range of positions due to scan mirror rotation is defined for the instrument ID -61700 as a rectangular pyramid centered on the -Y axis of the JUNO_UVS_BASE frame with half angular extents of 33.6 degrees (30 degree scan + 1/2 of 7.2 degree FOV height) in the YZ plane and 1.6 degrees (tilt due to rotation of the slit reflection + 1/2 of 0.2 degrees of FOV width) in YX plane of the JUNO_UVS_BASE frame. \begindata INS-61700_FOV_FRAME = 'JUNO_UVS_BASE' INS-61700_FOV_SHAPE = 'RECTANGLE' INS-61700_BORESIGHT = ( 0.0009216062 -0.9999992806 -0.0006687964 ) INS-61700_FOV_CLASS_SPEC = 'ANGLES' INS-61700_FOV_REF_VECTOR = ( 0.0, 0.0, 1.0 ) INS-61700_FOV_REF_ANGLE = ( 33.6 ) INS-61700_FOV_CROSS_ANGLE = ( 1.6 ) INS-61700_FOV_ANGLE_UNITS = 'DEGREES' \begintext Pixel View Directions -------------------------------------------------------- The UVS wide slit is mapped onto the detector on rows 54-118 and 170-234. a given mirror scan angle (ang) the transformation matrix rotating vectors from the JUNO_UVS_BASE frame to the JUNO_UVS frame can be computed as follows: M base->uvs = [ang]x * [ang]y * [-90]z While the time-varying orientation of the JUNO_UVS frame with respect to the JUNO_UVS_BASE frame is stored in UVS CK files and is best accessed via SPICE frame transformation routines that read CKs, for the record the INS-61701_SCAN_MIRROR_ANGLES keyword below provides the rotation angles values (Rx, Ry, and RZ in elements 2-4 of each record) for each of the mirror positions (mirror position index element 1 in each record). \begindata INS-61701_SCAN_MIRROR_ANGLES = ( 0 -30.2099 -30.2099 -90.0000 1 -29.9366 -29.9366 -90.0000 2 -29.2245 -29.2245 -90.0000 3 -28.5122 -28.5122 -90.0000 4 -27.7998
